Design, Construct and Compete (DCC) Challenge

Competition Rules

Requirements: Entrants must construct a balloon-powered car; no purchased cars will be allowed.

Specifications: There are no restrictions on car length, width or height. Only balloon power is permitted and the balloon(s) must be blown up by mouth (no mechanical pumps). A car may be powered by more than than one balloon. No external guides, like strings or walls, can be used to direct the car.

Eligibility: Contest is limited to Elementary School students. A team may enter more than one car, but must fill out separate entry forms for each car.

Location and Dimensions: Competition will take place at the Sisters High School gymnasium. Competition areas will be marked by tape on the gym floor.

Event:  Date of the event is Saturday, March 16, 2019.

All teams must register their cars before 1:30 PM. The first round of competition will begin at 2:00 PM.  The gym will be open at 1:30 PM for practice for competitors who have registered.

Competitors must complete and submit an Elementary Students Balloon Car Entry Form (available from teachers or at the office) on or before March 1st. Entry forms should submitted to teachers or left at the Sisters Elementary School office. Depending on the number of entrants, late registration may be accepted at discretion of the event organizers, but late registrants may not receive T-shirts.

Teams may be comprised of one or more individuals. The team must notify the judges of any changes to the team between the time of registration and the competition. No more than 4 T-shirts will be supplied to any one team. Shirt sizes will be those listed on the original registration form.

Competition: There will be one race and all competitors will compete at that time. The winner will be the car that travels the longest distance.

Judging: All rules shall be interpreted and enforced by a panel of 3 judges selected by the Fair. In cases where these published rules may not fully address an issue, which affects the competition, the judges are empowered to add or modify rules at any point in time, up to and throughout the actual competition.  Any such changes shall be made in a spirit of safety and fair competition and will be communicated to all contestants in a timely manner.

Prizes and Awards: Any awards will be awarded to the team. Contest organizers will have no input or responsibility regarding how a team allocates awards amongst itself. The awarding of prizes will be announced immediately following the competition.
